We came across Duvet Days 18 months ago and were inspired by Jenna’s beautiful illustrations of anatomy and representations of reproduction using the moon, stars, flowers and fruit.

We have been really pleased to work with Duvet Days and our Roki friends from Italy ANIMRKH ONLUS
to design this piece and add MRKH to the wide range of conditions and representations on her site.  Jenna was patient as we described MRKH and how it could be depicted and we can’t thank her enough for the work put in to making this artistic representation of MRKH depicting how MRKH typically affects the reproductive system.

MRKH (Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser) Syndrome is a congenital condition (present at birth) that affects around 1 in 5000 female births.

MRKH is a disorder of reproductive development leading to the absence (or underdevelopment) of the uterus, cervix, and the shortening of the vagina. It is often identified between the ages of 15-17 when periods don’t start despite other puberty development, and investigations are undertaken as to why.

There are two types of MRKH: Type 1 is the most common as identified by the characteristics above. Of those with Type 2 MRKH, approximately 40% will have differences in the development of their kidneys (e.g. ~15% have one kidney), ~10% may have bone changes and another ~10% may experience hearing difficulties.

There is an active and broad MRKH community with a wide range of organisations globally providing resources and support to those with MRKH of which MRKH Connect is just one piece.
